Saia Seeing Positive Results From Transit Time Improvements

DULUTH, GA – On October 1, 2002 Saia announced a reduction of one-day on published service times to more than 7,800 cities in its less-than-truckload network of operations. The changes mean that Saia customers will receive one-day faster delivery time from every point in the Saia system to those 7,800 cities.

As a result of that change, Saia now delivers 63 percent of its shipments in one day, versus the 58 percent it delivered in September. Overall, 90 percent of Saia shipments are delivered in two days or less versus the 87 percent prior to the October changes. This improvement impacts approximately 850 shipments a day. In addition to the transit time improvements, the on time service for the month of January was 97.6 percent, measured against the tougher transit times. This exceeded current on time service goals.

"When dealing with a challenging economic environment, customers become more demanding," said Saia President and CEO Rick O’Dell. "I am pleased that Saia employees again responded by elevating performance on our customers’ behalf. I am confident that improved transit times and consistent service contributed to Saia’s 6.5 percent shipment growth in the fourth quarter."

Customers directly benefit from these changes. They have more choices and flexibility for scheduling just-in-time shipments, and can get their product on shelves sooner.
