Saia to Participate in World's Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics
National event will raise funds and awareness for Special Olympic athletes Saia, Inc. (NASDAQ: SAIA) is pleased to announce it's participation in the World's Largest Truck Convoy (WLTC), which is a project of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. The WLTC is an annual event that unites officers and truckers in an effort to raise funds for Special Olympics athletes. This year, more than 3,000 trucks - big rigs to dump trucks - will traverse 1,000 miles during this Guinness Book of World Record breaking event. A convoy will take place in 38 cities throughout North America on September 20. This unique awareness and fund-raising event demonstrates the continued support of the trucking industry for the mission of the Special Olympics and the athletes involved. Saia City Driver Paul Stallings will participate in the Charlotte, N.C., onvoy that will begin at 11 a.m. at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Saia City Driver Dan Arambula will participate in the Lansing to Jackson, Mich. leg of the convoy. At their destination locations, truckers will be welcomed by Special Olympics athletes as well as their family members and friends where a closing ceremony and celebration will be held. Last year's event was an enormous success with more than 2,000 trucks participating. The single-day event raised more than $698,000 for Special Olympics Programs. The WLTC was founded by Norm Schneiderhan, special project coordinator with the Orange County, Florida Sheriff's Department. Inspired by the powerful impact Special Olympics had on his life through his participation in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, Schneiderhan combined his family's involvement with the trucking industry and his experience with Special Olympics to create this one-day celebration.
