Saia Donates Services to Feed the Hungry

Saia Partners with Non-Profit to Transport Donated Food

Saia, Inc. (NASDAQ: SAIA) provided transportation services in an effort to assist Gleanings for the Hungry, a California-based nonprofit and ministry of Youth with a Mission, in their efforts to feed the poor and needy of the world.

Saia transported 20 totes, or 40,000 pounds of food, donated by the Northwest Pea and Bean Company in Spokane, Washington to the Gleanings for the Hungry processing and shipping facility located in Southern California. From California, the food will be sent throughout the world to those in need of assistance. In 2007, Gleanings for the Hungry shipped 3.2 million pounds of food to 35 nations by partnering with over 30 mission agencies and churches. They project that product donations and distributions will increase this year.

Founded in 1982, Gleanings for the Hungry is a ministry of Youth with a Mission, an international movement that began in 1960 as a program to promote youth involvement in short-term mission work. Gleanings for the Hungry began their charitable work by providing donated dried fruit to the hungry. In 2000, they started producing and shipping a dried soup mix made from donated bulk dehydrated vegetables. All food products are processed and packaged via volunteers. It is then distributed all over the world to countries and regions such as Cambodia, China, Guatemala, South Africa, Romania, and the Ukraine. To learn more, visit www.gleanings.org.
