Saia, Inc. Awards Twelve Students Scholarships

DULUTH, GA - Saia, Inc. (NASDAQ: SAIA) is pleased to announce the names of 12 recipients receiving scholarships totaling $18,000 as part of the company's 2007 Scholarship Award Program. Now celebrating its fifth year of existence, the program has awarded a total of $64,000 to 41 deserving students since its inception.

The following six students were awarded a $2000 scholarship:

  • Eric Copes of Wichita, Kan.
  • Mandi Dillingham of Oklahoma City, Okla.
  • Athena Gilson of San Diego, Calif.
  • Heather Guzay of Muscle Shoals, Ala.
  • Jonathan Mayhew of Imperial, Calif.
  • Shane Prejean of Houma, La.


    • Another six students were awarded a $1000 scholarship. They are:

  • Renee Coppa of Damascus, Oreg.
  • Christi Grudier of Beaumont, Texas
  • Jeffery Kyle Hutchins of Stephenville, Texas
  • Alecia Smith of Pinconning, Mich.
  • Lacy Strom of Bennettsville, S.C.
  • Bailey Williams of Fort Smith, Ark.


    • As in the past, the program is open to full-time employees attending college and/or their dependants who are designated full-time students. It is designed to help recipients cover their college or graduate school expenses. Applications to the program were reviewed by a selection committee who evaluated each student's academic achievement, essay quality, community service, leadership capabilities, communication skills and recommendation letters. Scholarships were awarded based on achievement in one or more of three areas: Academic Merit, Community Service and/or Innovation.

    This year, Saia received 88 applications from across the country. Applications were received from employees and students working and residing in 14 regions where the company operates.

    According to Saia President and CEO Rick O'Dell, the scholarship program was designed to reinforce the importance of higher education and as a benefit to company employees and their children.

    "The response we receive each year for this program demonstrates the desire of students to build a bright future for themselves and in some instances, their families," said O'Dell. "Each recipient's drive and talents are commendable. They all should be extremely proud of their success in being selected a scholarship recipient from among a pool of such extremely qualified applicants."
