Saia, Inc.® Awards Thirteen Student Scholarships

Saia, Inc.® has announced the recipients of thirteen higher education scholarships totaling $19,000 in the second Saia Scholarship Award program.

Scholarships were awarded to employees of Saia or their dependents.

"This scholarship program is a Saia initiative that was designed to reinforce the importance of education, and to benefit our employees and their children," said Saia President and CEO Rick O'Dell. "The response we received for this program for the second year highlights the desire of students to build a solid future based on a strong educational foundation"

Applicants were evaluated based on academic achievement, quality of essays, community service, leadership capability, communication skills and recommendation letters. Scholarships were awarded based on achievement in one or more of three areas: Academic Merit, Community Service and/or Innovation.

Six $2,000 Scholarships

Mandi Dillingham, daughter of Donald Dillingham, OKC Line Driver. Mandi is a student at East Central University and was a 2003 scholarship recipient.

Kelli Haas, daughter of Michael L. Haas, AUS City Driver. Kelli is a student at Texas State University, San Marcos and was a 2003 scholarship recipient.

Leah Layman, daughter of Charles David Layman, TPA Line Driver. Leah is a student at Florida State University and was a 2003 scholarship recipient.

Eric Merkel, son of Charles Merkel, WFL Sales. Eric is a student at Midwestern State University.

Brooke Savoie, daughter of Daryal Savoie, NOL Line Driver. Brooke is a student at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Ryan Sousley, son of John Sousley, FON Line Driver. Ryan is a student at Cal Poly Pomona and was a 2003 scholarship recipient.

Seven $1,000 Scholarships

Eric Copes, WTK P&D Driver, will study business management and continue his career in the motor freight industry.

Kara Gaskins, daughter of Kenneth Gaskins, KNX Line Driver. Kara is a student at Pellisippi State Technical Community College and a 2003 scholarship recipient.

Shundra Jackson, daughter of Maurice L. Jackson, ATL Dock. Shundra will attend the University of Georgia.

Jonathon Mayhew, son of Gerald Mayhew, CLX City Driver. Jonathan will attend Liberty University.

Michael Schulthies, son of Clare Armstrong, TWF City Driver. Michael is a student at Universal Technical Institute.

Lacy Strom, son of Michael F. Strom, FSC City Driver. Lacy is a student at the University of South Carolina.

Christopher Stump, son of Thomas Stump, ROA City Driver. Christopher is a student at the University of Kentucky.

Applicant response has increased dramatically over the two years since the scholarship program was introduced. Last year, ten recipients were awarded scholarships from a total of $15,000 earmarked for the program.

"The applicants the committee evaluated were excellent," said O'Dell, "showing that these very deserving students are high academic achievers, very well respected in their communities, and are highly recommended by their associates, teachers and community leaders,"

Saia received applications from across the country. Applications were received from students and employees in 14 regions, 18 states and 42 terminals.
