Saia Advances Wireless Technology Strategy

A handheld computer-assisted dispatch program is being rolled out in Saia’s 112 terminal network providing an enhanced dispatch management tool and "real time" shipment status information for customers.

Drivers have Nextel phones/radios, which are enhanced by adding an Internet-browsing tool that allows them to access Saia’s computer system via the World Wide Web. The program is being launched in the larger Saia terminals first, and by early next year, approximately 70 percent of Saia city drivers will be utilizing the system. Saia expects to have the system implemented throughout the company next year.

Additionally, a wireless yard management system will be rolled out that will enable Saia personnel at large facilities to see the status of all equipment in the yard at any time. Also, an updated wireless cross-dock application is in a pilot environment in a Saia location.

Saia customers and employees will see numerous benefits as a part of this implementation:

Customer Benefits Include
  • Capture and communication of real time information
  • Handling freight less
  • Up to the minute shipment status information
  • Freight deliveries earlier in the day
  • Increased billing accuracy
  • Fewer delivery exceptions
Saia Operations Benefits Include
  • Improved utilization of company equipment
  • Improved outbound and inbound planning
  • Improved scheduling capabilities
  • Records info on trailers that are dropped, hooked
  • Allows input of delivery signatures
"We’ve received positive feedback from a number of customers on 'real-time' delivery status now available at many of our terminals," said Saia President and CEO Rick O’Dell. "Advancing wireless technology further demonstrates our commitment to investing in infrastructure that supports our best-in-class service."
