ITEM 810 Protect From Freezing Service

Protective service for freezables will be provided at Carrier's discretion on single-line and shipments to Canada from October 1st through April 30th, subject to the following:

  1. Suitable equipment is available.
  2. The Bill of Lading must be clearly marked with the notation, "Protect From Freezing".
  3. Outside temperature is forecast to be 10 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and then shipments will be accepted on the following days:
    • Next Day Transit Lanes - Monday through Thursday.
    • Second Day Transit Lanes - Monday through Wednesday.
    • Third Day Transit Lanes - Monday and Tuesday.
    Protect from Freezing service will not be available on Fridays or the day before a holiday.
  4. Protect from Freezing service will not be available on shipments requiring appointments.
  5. Protect from Freezing service will not be available on shipments requiring "will call" or "dock pick up".
  6. Protect from Freezing service will not be available on COD and Order Notify shipments as well as shipments moving In Bond.
  7. When Protect from Freezing is requested on mixed shipments, the weight of all articles in the shipment will be considered as requiring protection and will be so rated.
  8. Each package must have the notation "protect from freezing" if the shipment is less than 6500 lbs.
Carrier's cargo claim liability will be subject to the limits and provisions as provided in the Saia 170 Series Rules Tariff.

Carrier may refuse to accept any shipment where weather forecasts or prevailing road conditions indicate probable highway closures.

The charge for Protect from Freezing is $1.75 cwt subject to a minimum charge of $25.00 per shipment.
